Breaking Borders 2027 brings together writers, translators and artists across three cities — London, New York and Los Angeles — with new commissions, translation and public conversations.
The programme continues a publishing history that runs through Litro’s international editions: Mexico, Brazil, and the original Breaking Borders — writing that has crossed languages and borders for more than a decade.
03 / WHERE IT BEGAN
The original edition, 2017.
The first Breaking Borders was guest-edited by Chloe Aridjis: fiction, essays and poetry from eight countries, published in English translation alongside writing first made in English.
Its writers, translators and artworks remain part of Litro’s living archive — and its questions about movement, language and belonging have only grown sharper in the decade since.

04 / ONE POET, TWO EDITIONS
Natalia Toledo writes in Zapotec and Spanish.
Her poems appeared in Litro’s Mexico edition in 2015 — the year she read in London as Litro presented the issue in translation — and again in Breaking Borders in 2017. Two editions, three languages, one voice carrying place, family and ancestry across all of them.
