Writing Place: Inside and Out is a live masterclass for prose writers who want setting to do real work on the page. Using practical methods from psychogeography and embodied writing, you’ll generate fresh material and learn how to root scenes in specific places, build atmosphere and subtext, and use place to reveal character and agency.

Over 75 minutes, we’ll write from observation, memory, and imagined environments — then bring the tools together in a signature scene exercise that helps you move beyond passive “background setting” into dynamic environments that shape what happens.

How you will learn

You’ll learn by writing in-session, on the clock, using guided psychogeography and embodied prompts — then shaping what you’ve produced into a usable draft you can develop after the class.

  • Live Zoom session (75 minutes): short teaching segments, timed writing, then practical reflection on what worked and why.
  • Embodied writing method: use the senses, observation, and memory to generate concrete detail, atmosphere, and subtext.
  • Evocative objects exercise: root a place through a single object (bring a small natural object such as a leaf, stone, or seedpod).
  • Signature scene exercise: place a character in an unfamiliar environment and show emotion through space, body language, behaviour, and interaction.
  • Optional sharing: share one brief observation or extract (no pressure; sharing is always optional).
  • Resources to keep: a curated reading list plus a bank of 10 walking-writing prompts you can reuse anytime.
  • Optional homework: refine one response (up to 300 words) for light-touch feedback (not edits).
  • Replay (enabled): recording available for 30 days.

Build dynamic settings that shape atmosphere, character, and agency — and generate fresh material in-session..
