Garth Cartwright on American Music
The Kiwi-born wanderer (author of 2005’s best music book, “Princes Amongst Men: Journeys with Gyspsy Musicians”), talks us through his latest work, “More Miles than Money: Journeys Through American Music”, in which he sets out to see whether the American roots music he loves – blues and country, folk and soul – is still alive in the 21st century. His journey takes him from the sandstorms of the Burning Man Festival to the LA bus station to the Mexican cantinas of San Antonio, the Indian reservations of New Mexico to the last surviving juke joints of Highway 61. He is an award-winning journalist who regularly contributes to The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Songlines and the BBC World Service. He has compiled many CDs, knocked up bits and pieces for many a music and/or travel book and DJs whenever anyone lets him near turntables and a mixer.

Garth’s accompanied by Errol Linton on harmonica. Best known for his “Blues Vibe” combo, Errol has kept the legacy of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson sounding raw, fresh and above all, strangely British.

Chris Salewicz on Bob Marley
