When I was seven, my mother told me spotting a black cat brought ill luck. Whenever I saw one in my neighborhood, I heard of some accident or death. Initially, I wanted to dismiss it as a mere coincidence. I loved these elegant, enigmatic creatures with velvety black fur and bewitching eyes. My grandmother died the day I rescued a black cat from a ditch and I never went near one again.
