Announcing: The Verity Bargate Award and workshops for emerging writers

soho theateAs we know that many of our readers are writers themselves, we are pleased to let you know that Verity Bargate Award has just been announced. If you are an up-and-coming writer of plays, or looking to write for the theatre, then this competition is an excellent opportunity to see your work be recognised, performed and receive a cash prize. Even if you aren’t able to enter, the Soho Theatre is running a series of writers workshops as a prelude to the close of the competition which might well prove to be very interesting and useful for any budding playwrights. Full details of this are below.

The Verity Bargate Award is a national competition for the best new play by an emerging writer. The winner will receive:

* £5000
* The chance to have their play produced by Soho Theatre

The deadline is the 11th March 2011.

In the run up to this, the Soho Theatre is offering a series of workshops in London and throughout the UK. Highlights include their fifth weekend-long Writers’ Clinic led by Nina Steiger and Diane Samuels; celebrated playwright Philip Ridley in conversation about his work; Jack Bradley (Desperately Seeking Structure); Oladipo Agboulaje on complex, crowd-pleasing plays; Paul Sirett on the recipe for writing a VBA-winner; Steve Marmion on the role of comedy, cabaret, absurdism and cross-form theatre; and past winners Matt Charman and Insook Chappell on those last minute moments before deadline.

Open Access Workshops and Masterclasses in collaboration with our regional partners will also be held in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Plymouth, Leeds, Northampton, Newcastle, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester and Cardiff.
