Here’s How to Actually Practice for GRE Exam

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is an important test for any student. It will affect the number of colleges or universities that will consider offering you a place. This is especially true in the United States of America. If someone has their hopes on a particular institution, it is paramount that they achieve the requested score.

Once someone has enrolled for the actual exam, it can be difficult to know how to best proceed. This article has been written to help you adequately prepare.

Maximize Your Understanding

The GRE General exam will cover analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning. The GRE Subject exam is similar (and deemed harder by many) but needs some aspects to be tackled differently. The vocabulary angle will not feature in the Subject exam.

It is great to make some online research right from the start. When preparing for your GRE test, it’s helpful to receive advice on your study schedule from professionals. They may explain the value of doing practice tests and setting your target score. They may also clarify what flashcards are and why it’s important to maintain a healthy routine.

Use Flashcards

Special flashcards can be obtained to cover both your maths skills and your vocabulary. Students can learn brand new words and also familiarize themselves with syllabus-specific ones.

When a new word is introduced, there will be examples of other (perhaps more familiar) words that have the same meaning. Example sentences may also be supplied to show the words in context.

Choose packs of strong cards that are long-lasting and can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

Buy Study Books

If reading is your preferred learning route, there are several books you can buy, including ‘official’ and ‘complete’ guides to the actual exam.

You can also look for some books that focus solely on one of the three categories: analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.

Use Practice Papers

Several companies offer free online practice papers. Some use genuine exam questions, while some others feature similar ‘copycat’ questions.

Practice papers can be a great way to discover your strengths and weaknesses, so you know which aspects to focus on.

Use Training Videos and Online Coaching Classes

Some trainers have a presence on websites and Youtube. Videos can be a great way for people to receive tuition and to discover new exam questions.

Online coaching classes may not be free, but they are well worth it. They offer such things as full-length tests, topic tests, lectures, and quizzes.

Take It Easy The Week Before

The actual exam is not designed to be achieved by last-minute cramming. In fact, it can be good to refrain from studying during the last few days, to let your mind settle. The test is partly about your reasoning process, so you need to be energized and refreshed on the day.

Once the preparation has been fully completed, a student will be ready to tackle the exam. They will have learned aspects of maths and language, and also how to reason and think for themselves. If the target score is attained, the student will be able to take their learning to the next level.
